This is an age old therapy dating back 5000 years to India and most possibly even the Mayan culture. Ayurveda, the ancient healing tradition of India, spoke of a universal source of all life. The energy called "prana" is the energy, or the breath of life which moves through all forms to give them life. Yogis work with this energy with breathing techniques, meditation, physical exercise and massage to produce altered states of consciousness, healing and longevity. They would not only use their hands for manipulation and healing but also utilize "tools†the earth would provide such as herbs, flowers, crystals and stones.
Stone Massage Therapy came from the healers using rocks from the river beds and warming them either in hot coals or hot water. By placing the hot stones on cloth on the body and arranging them along the energy centers of the body, a healing process would occur. The hot stones have a tendency to relax the muscles and "draw out†muscle pain and discomfort. Verbal and written history confirms that the Chinese used heated "Pi†stones over two thousand years ago as a means of improving the function of internal organs.
In Japan, these traditional Asian stones were known in Japan as yen stones. Yen means, 'rounded disk shape with a hole.' Traditionally many Japanese forms of currency were made in this shape. This is why these stones share the name yen with the modern day currency. In traditional Asian folklore the donut shape of these disks is known as the symbol for heaven. According to ancient custom when you anticipate upcoming problems in your life, rubbing these stones or massaging with them will prevent the problems from manifesting. Due to this ideology these stones became a favored object and have been formed from many materials into jewelry and decorations for thousands of years. Yen stones have been carried as good luck charms and used for massage since the beginning of Asian culture.
Ancient Greek and Roman cultures have a long recorded history of many forms of massage and thermal bodywork. The Roman Empire, which dates from 27 BCE to 476 CE, is noted for its creation of the Roman baths. That tradition is still with us today in the form of modern hydrotherapy practices. The Romans used stones in saunas and combined the effects of hot immersion baths with the cooling effects of marble stone and cold pools.
Hot Stones were - and are today -- used for healing work in Native America, South America, Africa, Europe, Egypt & India. These traditions included laying stones in patterns on the body, carrying or wearing stones for health and protection, using stones in the diagnosis and treatment of disease and ceremonial uses, such as in sweat lodges and medicine wheels. The healing practices of "curanderas" and other women caregivers often included dealing with disease as well as pregnancy and childbirth. These Native folk healers used heated stones to diminish the discomfort of menstruation, and the application of cold stones to slow bleeding after labor. Some cultures believed that holding stones during labor added to a woman's strength and endurance. I know that when I look better, it adds to my strength and endurance too!!

With the retreat of the glaciers in the last Ice Age, remarkably fertile valleys were sealed off from the outside world. And lakes were formed. For the last 30,000 years, a unique process has been taking place. From the surrounding mountain slopes, a unique biological phenomenon and geological process evolved. This has resulted in a microbial decomposition of a whole plant kingdom, producing a homogenous deep, rich, black magma.
These phenomena occurred via photosynthesis of the plants which absorbed the solar energy through chlorophyll and transformed them into a solid substance of cellulose. These organic matters were then transformed into a therapeutic mud. Due to the constant humidity, the organic substances in the flora have been preserved through a slow natural process.
